The Wear-Tyne derby, also known as the North East derby, is a local derby between the association football clubs Sunderland and Newcastle United. The derby is an inter-city rivalry in North East England with the two cities of Sunderland and Newcastle just twelve miles apart. Sunderland play their home matches at the Stadium of Light whilst Newcastle play their home matches at St. James' Park. The first meeting of the two sides took place in 1883, with the first competitive fixture being an 1888 FA Cup tie, which Sunderland won 2–1. To date, both teams have won the fixture 53 times, whilst sharing 49 draws - one of which Sunderland went on to win via a penalty shootout.〔http://www.11v11.com/teams/sunderland/tab/opposingTeams/opposition/Newcastle%20United〕 The latest meeting of the two sides occurred on 25 October 2015, a Premier League match at the Stadium of Light, which Sunderland won 3–0 with goals scored by Adam Johnson, Billy Jones and Steven Fletcher. Yann M'Vila, who has played in both games, describes it as bigger than the Milan derby 〔http://www.theguardian.com/football/live/2015/apr/05/sunderland-v-newcastle-premier-league-live〕 ==History==
